Reviews

"The author of this book made the commendable choice to go against the current trend of including extreme violence and highly explicit scenes, probably realizing that those aren't needed to write an entertaining story, which still ended up far from being tame. With less filler content just to shock the reader, I found all the emotions to have a longer lasting impact.

There's an interesting mix of fantasy and science fiction functioning as the backdrop, which is also a bit scary if you think about it for a while. But of course the main focus lies on the three characters, a love triangle, if you will, all of which will make you laugh, cheer, think or perhaps even cry.

Everyone longing for an adventure or a wonderful love story should give this book a try".

About the Title

Makkura (makkura): complete darkness, no glimmer of hope, pitch-black

Excerpt

"Hmmm - hm hmm hm - hmmm."

Lying on my back in the wildflower meadow behind our cottage with outstretched limbs and my mind reaching out for a world beyond the clouds, I bathed my sorrows in the melody of the Goddess' Lament.

This particular patch of grass had become a bed I frequented more often than my own, for I spent the long nights sitting in a corner of my room with a candle in my hand, unaware that I did not fear the darkness that surrounded me, but the lack of light in my heart.

"Hm-hm-hm."

There were a great many flowers around me, proudly showing off a variety of shining colours and enriching the air with their sweet scent. I knew of their existence, yet due to my gloomy mood their beauty entirely escaped me. So must have done the loveliness of the songbirds' singing, whose desperate performance hardly even reached my ears.

"Hm - hmmm hmmm."

Even if it had, it wouldn't have been able to take my mind off the melody that seemed to reflect my mood so well.

The sun had grown weaker, and over the many hours of the day it had slowly shifted towards the horizon. It was a sign that it had to be around dinner time, and under normal circumstances my mother would have called for me to come into the house, if she hadn't done so earlier, worrying that I was going to ruin my dress. As things were now though, she was too busy to take care of me as she had done in the past. Since my father had left, she had been forced to accept a series of odd jobs that often kept her away from home until late in the evenings.

I sighed for the two-hundred-and-seventh time that day without feeling much relief. Whatever it was that was sitting on my chest, it certainly couldn't be blown away by the weak draught of my own breath.

"Once more and not even the Goddess will be able to save you," a deep, gentle voice teased me.

Makkura is still work in progress!
